Sound Transit began building a light-rail guideway at what will be the future site for the Kent/Des Moines Station, Mass Transit Magazine reported.
The Federal Way Link Extension is the beginning of the guideway construction. Crews have been working to remove trees and relocate utilities that were underground and clearing and grading the area, the news media reported.
"Commuters who travel I-5 in South King County can now see changes to the landscape as our crews make progress on the Federal Way Link Extension," Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff said, the news media reported. "In just a few years, this new light-rail extension will transform the way people travel to and from South King County and provide countless people greater access to job and housing opportunities."
The Federal Way Link, as well as other extensions that are currently under construction, will bring the light-rail system in the area from 22 miles to 62 miles by 2024. That also expands the number of stations from 22 to 50, the news media reported.
