As the number of COVID-19 cases in the Des Moines area continue to climb, the Des Moines' mayor recently moved to tighten its health safety measures that include limits on gatherings and encouraging residents to wear masks.
Mayor Frank Cownie issued an amendment to the city's emergency health proclamation, which was originally issued back in March to include a prohibition of indoor gatherings of 10 or more on public property as well as sporting and social events of more than 250 people on public property, according to a KCCI report. The amendment also "strongly and urgently" encourages residents to wear a face covering in public.
Cownie stated that the amendment was needed because the coronavirus was spiking at "an alarming rate" and that the city's health care system and residents are "in immediate danger with no end in sight," according to the KCCI report.
