The City of Des Moines, in collaboration with Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS), has launched The Mulberry Street Café initiative, a program to provide free hot meals to needy local families and residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release on the city's official website.
The initiative has received $350,000 in coronavirus relief funds from the city and administered by CISS to compensate restaurants participating in the program.
Restaurants participating in the initiative include: 5 Spice Sisters, Big Red Truck, Catering Con Amor, El Fogon, Hotsy Totsy, Palm’s Caribbean Cuisine, Prep Kings and Tursi’s Latin King. They will serve meals to needy Des Moines residents this summer at more than eight distribution sites across the city, according to the press release.
“We knew we had a need during the community outbreak of the coronavirus – the great thing about this program is that it helps folks on two fronts,” said Mayor Frank Cownie, according to the press release. “We’re able to provide some business to Des Moines restaurants significantly impacted these past three months while providing nutritious, healthy meals to our residents who might need a little help right now.”
Residents can check on the city's official website to see a list of dates and locations of distribution sites.
