Between 450 and 500 students are being served meals by the Knoxville Community School District each day during COVID-19.
“It seems the longer we go, more people are showing up,” District Business Manager Craig Mobley told the Marion County Tribune.
Volunteer food service staff members are providing students with breakfast and lunch. A total of 4,500 meals are being distributed each week.
Food access has become an issue as school districts throughout Iowa are seeking the same ingredients in their offered meals. Knoxville CSD cooks are becoming more creative with meal preparations and are changing the type of food included within the meals.
As stated on Knoxville CSD’s website, all school district buildings are closed until further notice to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The Iowa Department of Public Health reports that there have been more than 10,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state and over 200 related deaths.
