A number of county inmates are being considered for early release to avoid creating a coronavirus hot spot in county jails.
Sheriffs in Story and Dallas counties are working with judges and county attorneys to develop a plan that would allow early release for certain inmates and lower the jail populations.
Story County is developing criteria that includes inmates who are jailed for misdemeanor or nonviolent charges, according to Local 5. Dallas County is looking at releasing inmates who have preexisting medical conditions and similar crimes to Story County.
Neither Polk nor Madison County have considered releasing an inmate because of COVID-19 concerns.
Counties have taken steps to protect current inmate populations that include screening people taken into custody and restricting visitor access.
The pandemic and subsequent emergency order has also changed the way sheriff departments are conducting business. Offices have been closed and business that cannot be completed online or by phone or mail must be scheduled by appointment.
