Renovations for the courthouse in Knoxville were approved by the Marion County Board of Supervisors recently.

Many improvements will be made to the courthouse, Mark Raymie, the chairman of the Marion County Board of Supervisors, said to Local 5 news.

The renovations are expected to total $2.1 million and general fun money is being used to pay for it, he said.

A new elevator compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act is approved for the courthouse. Raymie said the elevator will cost $1.5 million.

The courthouse will also have a sprinkler system installed. Raymie said the courthouse will get new carpet as well. While the courthouse is being renovated, Raymie said a lease is being worked out with the City of Knoxville. Most courthouse business would be moved to the abandoned East Elementary building.

Construction will take between five and six months, he said. The renovations are set to start in March.
