After its first official month of legal sports gambling, Iowa casinos have seen multi-million dollars in wagers.
According to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, local casinos processed close to $40 million in September.
Sports gambling was made legal in the state of Iowa for the first time in August. The state officially went live on Aug. 15.
Fifteen of the 18 licensed casinos in Iowa had bets processed in September. The other three locations went live in October.
The total amount of money wagered was $38.5 million, with a net revenue of nearly $5 million.
Iowa is the 11th state in the country to legalize sports gambling. September was the right time for the move, as the month kicked off the college and professional football seasons.
Iowa receives 6.75 percent in tax revenue on the casinos’ receipts. According to the Gaming Commission, that resulted in over $300,000 for the state in September.
